La Città Reale is an experimental narrative using puppetry and moving cardboard insects. The hand of the puppeteer performer becomes a form of moving city, where individuals and communities are isolated but always interconnected. The film is a testament to vulnerability and resilience in contemporary times.

Director Statement
La Città Reale is a collaboration between the British filmmaker, Hing Tsang and Anglo- Peruvian performance artist and puppeteer, José Navarro. This experimental work explores the relationship between human and animal life in a contemporary setting, focussing especially on notions of isolation within a communal context. It experiments as well with notions of scale, perspective and body movement across different spaces. Recycled materials have been recontextualized through sound and movement to produce an experiential and immersive audio-visual work.
In my recent work, I am interested in extending both the notion of performance and landscape in a highly immersive visceral fashion. The work also embodies a response to present issues of social isolation within an epoch of great technological and demographic change.
The collaboration has brought together two different but complementary aesthetic perspectives. As a filmmaker, I have always been interested in landscape as an active narrative. José Navarro, is a mime and performance artist whose work has been shown across Europe, Asia and Latin America. His work continues to explore the relationship between body and nature through the use of both physical puppets and the performer’s body across a range of different live performance formats.
