In the aftermath of the 1980 Military Coup in Anatolia, Mustafa's journey begins in a classroom. Here, he grapples with a stubborn pencil, which becomes a symbol of his and the era's youths' struggles. A lead pencil is concealed within the back of an old razor blade. Only the tip of the lead pencil is visible, and then it breaks. As he exits the classroom, he throws the pencil into the trash, as if rebelling.
While studying at home, he is anxious due to the pencil running out of ink. We witness his father's entrance, who removes his uniform jacket, revealing his identity as a civil servant.
Three of them ( Mustafa, Father, Mother ) sit at the dinner table. The father eats slowly with an expressionless face. Mustafa's mother conveys the child's request for a new pencil to the father. His father becomes angry, shattering the child's heart.
Retreating to his room, the father takes off his jacket, placing his hand in his pocket, retrieving a snapped pencil. Meanwhile, Mustafa's mother breaks the sharp part of a razor blade, covers the fractured end with a bandage, and hands it to Mustafa. Holding the pen, the father enters a flashback. In a courtroom, he stands as an usher. As the judge reads a death sentence, he breaks the pencil—an action unique to Turkey, symbolizing a judge's response to a death sentence. The pen snaps, and another hand retrieves the fragments, concealing them.
Mustafa hands the plastic piece to his father. His father inserts the pen into the plastic piece and extends it to him. The child takes it and walks away. A smile appears on the father's face. He puts his hand in his pocket, retrieves the other half of the pencil, and his smile disappears. He opens a drawer and adds yet another broken pen to the others...
After the 1980 Military Coup, 7000 individuals were tried with the demand for the death penalty. Of these, 517 had their PENCILS BROKEN.
