Thai dance embodies many of the gendered social, religious, and political dynamics at play in the larger Thai cultural context. Dance training is introduced and continues throughout a child’s early education and serves as a key means for transmitting Thai culture to children (Sriyanond 2000). The dance forms themselves are often characterized by distinct gendered choreography, where detailed and precise body movements define and articulate gender norms.

Kwame Philips is Senior Lecturer in Media Practices at the Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, England, specializing in sensory media production, visual anthropology and audio culture. Philips’ work focuses on resilience, race and social justice using multimodal and experimental methodologies.

He is director of the short film “Tea 1 of 7,” part of an anthology by the Visual Scholarship Initiative (VSI), and the short ethnographic documentary “Welcome to Pa Pae.” He is also director of the visual mixtapes "The Imagined Things: On Solange, Repetition and Mantra" and "Lovers Rock Dub: An Experiment in Visual Reverberation."
