The experimental feature film “Leo Tolstoy: Beyond Photography”, based on the diaries of Tolstoy which he kept for 64 years, introduces into Tolstoy’s philosophy and his world outlook.
We sense his unique dialogue with the world where for most people death is a constant presence. But from his deepest thoughts came the belief, endlessly argued, that death is not the end of life. But how to convey this to others? The film follows the conflict which arises between Tolstoy and the challenges of his entourage against an ever-changing cultural landscape of the Yasnaya Polyana brought to life by archival stereophotography converted into 3D film. The film was created as a part of the educational project "Intelligent Cinema" and is a kind of introduction into the philosophy of Leo Tolstoy. It is an attempt to answer the question - are Tolstoy's ideas still relevant today? This seems actual given the 195th anniversary of Tolstoy, which the world celebrates this year and taking into account that the world has drastically changed in this time. The film was shot in the house where Tolstoy lived all his life. (Film could be presented in 2D or 3D version. Version of the film dubbed in English can be presented either)
